This chapter discusses how to establish goals to measure the success of our campaign. These should be directly tied to the stated objectives, as well as being measureable and achievable. It is important to track as many actions, goals, and engagement data as possible. This is what really drives understanding and insight from your analytics data and will allow you to assess which campaigns are delivering the goods.
I always tell people to think of their site as a pyramid. Your brand is at the very top, below that is your cornerstone content for your “head: keywords, the keywords you care about the most, below those are dozens – if not hundreds or thousands – of pages, strengthening your site’s structure. I wrote about site structure & SEO over 3 years ago but it still rings true. We wrote about both these topics in our ebook too.

Sometimes taking a step back to think about your audience and goals can give you a new perspective. I once worked on a campaign for a theme park. We initially identified the target audience as moms living in specific states. We determined she worked full-time, so was usually online during the workday or late at night. Life was chaotic for her, so she wanted simplicity and ease.  We wanted mom to request a visitor’s kit for the park, so this was our X number of conversions goal. However, what the client really wanted was for the whole family to actually visit. After some research it became apparent that our immediate audience might be mom because she was online, but who we really needed to get excited were the kids. We designed a landing page that had a few bullets of information that mom could read quickly, but we also mentioned the cool items that would be in the visitor’s kit just for her kids. While mom was the one filling out the form, the kids were major influencers so it was important to get the kids excited too.  What was sent in the visitor’s kit was important but so was the landing page. Mom was looking at the landing page from the perspective of her kids – we needed to consider the photos and colors to make the page feel like a fun place to be. She wanted to know that it would be a place her kids would enjoy and be excited about. We needed to find a balance that would appeal to mom, encouraging her to request a visitor’s kit, while giving her the impression her kids would enjoy the experience.  By taking this new perspective, we were able to develop ad text, landing pages and a visitor’s kit that allowed us to target our entire audience rather than the single audience the analytics data pointed to.
One of the best tools you can use to do your keyword research directly on YouTube is Keywords Everywhere, a free Chrome extension and Firefox plugin. It works directly in the search bar, so all you have to do is type in a word or phrase you’re thinking of targeting, and Keywords Everywhere will display the monthly search volume, competition, and cost per click to advertise against the keyword.

Your keyword strategy should make clear which “keyword groups” you focus on. It doesn’t have to be a long list of keywords (though it doesn’t hurt to have one). Your keyword strategy should be a definition of a group of keywords that you’re tackling. Every time you’re writing new content you can have a quick look at those groups and pick a new keyword that falls in line with the strategy.
In 2016, we used ROAS to reduce non-converting spend and improve overall profitability. At the end of the second quarter, CPA was nearly 18% over our $20 goal. To address this, we examined our highest CPA campaigns and noted that one campaign (“Campaign 1”) was at nearly twice our CPA goal for the past year, but had also generated the most revenue relative to its spend. On the other hand, we could see that our poorest converting campaign (“Campaign 6”) had not closed any leads in the past 12 months.
Both geo-fencing and geo-targeting can be done on mobile, tablet, computer, or even gaming devices with internet access.  When it comes to deciding which is best for your marketing, think of who your target customer is. If you are interested in advertising to a population of all ages and all interests, geo-fencing is perfect for you. If you are only interested in hitting only a specific consumer demographic that is more niche, then you should be doing geo-targeting.
Increase Clicks: If you have a niche site that has high quality scores and impression shares, but not enough volume to spend your budget, you will want to increase the traffic sent to your site while maintaining control over click costs. This can be done by increasing bids, expanding your keyword list, improving click through rates and refining ad copy. All of these items can be adjusted/improved upon to help reach your budgeted spend.
Using geo-targeting, you use smart marketing tactics. A great example of a successful use of area segmenting is evo, an e-commerce sporting goods store. When they took the leap to open up three brick and mortar stores. Their first step was to send out an email blast for a $200 shopping trip to users in the area. Though the campaign had a 58% conversion on mobile users, the campaign wasn’t as effective at driving traffic to their store fronts.
SpyFu displays side-by-side data on your competitors' paid and organic search results, so you can easily see where it's more cost-effective to bid on a particular keyword as opposed to trying to rank for  it organically. That way you can use your time more efficiently by writing content around those keywords that drive a lot of traffic but are more expensive to bid on.

From my experience, you don’t need complex algorithms to save money with paid search. You don’t need a crazy PPC management tool to trim down costs for campaigns. You need only employ one of 3 core paid search strategies in order to succeed in your PPC campaigns: 1) Maximize your budget, 2) Improve Branding by showing up in a top position and 3) Maximize your profit potential.
It’s worth mentioning that some of these terms are still evolving, and their use is still being defined. For example, geo-targeting is often used synonymously with location targeting, for now, but that could change. Terms and meaning might shift over time as the technology and its uses evolve. But, like geo-targeting, we’ve got you covered right here, right now.

It's important to check that you have a mix of head terms and long-tail terms because it'll give you a keyword strategy that's well balanced with long-term goals and short-term wins. That's because head terms are generally searched more frequently, making them often (not always, but often) much more competitive and harder to rank for than long-tail terms. Think about it: Without even looking up search volume or difficulty, which of the following terms do you think would be harder to rank for?

To more effectively drive traffic to their stores, they pushed out a 10% discount on any in-store purchase when customers provided their email. This not only drove traffic to their new shops, it also helped them construct lists for each store that they could later use for store promotions. By targeting these specific users in areas near their stores and then promoting to in-store audiences, an e-commerce site successfully made the move to store fronts. Working on common practice tasks such as negative matching, keyword expansion and more are the right things to do for an account, and there’s a proper place and time to do them. Without a policy governing how to manage our PPC accounts, we’re “stringing tactics together,” which creates misalignment between volume of work done versus meaningful work that’s impacting results positively.
Location history of a consumer provides a lot of information specific to that person: where they like to shop, what they like to buy, how often they make the trip, and even how they get there. Obtaining this information gives great insight to marketers that enhances the ability to target consumers and deliver relevant, responsive location specific ads and information, even if the consumer is not currently in that area.
If you can get inside the head of your audience, it will be easier to communicate in their language and know where they are coming from.  Next you need to think about what you want your audience to do, or really, what is your ultimate goal? Think about the immediate action (for instance request a catalog or submit contact info) but then think beyond this to the ultimate revenue-generating goal. Do you want them to watch the mailbox in anticipation of a trial kit? Tell friends and family about a great offer? Enroll in a class?  Work backwards to create a funnel with all channels guiding your user to the end goal. If your goal is to have a visitor spread the word about an offer, make sure your landing page gives them the opportunity to easily pass along the news.
