Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm cutting my losses and planning to migrate to Apple come the new year. The laptop starts the shutdown process with the spinning windows thingy, then the screen goes black but the power light stays on and the hard drive light flickers occasionally except it and now everything is fine. That being done, I began the Windows 10 upgrade again only for it to stop again at exactly 75%. It might be busy. But I have learnt to be patient!! The answer to the "never completely shutting down" problem could rest in the BIOS, if the above advice didn't work for you.
